Daikin Mini-Split U4: Indoor/Outdoor Communication Error
Daikin U4 error code means the indoor and outdoor units lost communication. Wiring check, PCB diagnosis, and fix guide.
Last Updated: June 2026
U4 on a Daikin mini-split means the indoor and outdoor units have lost communication. Like Mitsubishi's E6, this typically points to wiring between the units, a capacitor failure on the outdoor PCB, or a failed control board.
Communication failure between indoor and outdoor units. The signal exchange that synchronizes the two units has failed or become unreliable.
Diagnosis steps
- Power reset. Cut breaker for 60 seconds and restore. If U4 clears, monitor for recurrence. A single occurrence after a power event is not necessarily a hardware failure.
- Check communication wiring. The indoor-to-outdoor communication signal runs on labeled terminals (typically S or signal terminals on the terminal block). Open both indoor and outdoor terminal blocks and verify: wires are in the correct terminals, connections are tight, no corrosion, no visible damage along the wire run.
- Check for signal cable damage. The communication wire typically runs alongside the refrigerant lines. Where it enters and exits the building are common damage points — check for chafed insulation, compression damage (staples or clamps too tight), or rodent damage.
- Verify wire ORDER matches both ends. This is the single most common DIY-fixable U4 cause: the numbered/colored terminals (1, 2, 3 / L, N, S) must land in the same order on the indoor and outdoor blocks. A swapped or shifted wire — common after a DIY install or a board swap — guarantees U4. Confirm terminal 1 outside goes to terminal 1 inside, and so on, and that the signal (S) wire isn't reversed with a power leg.
- Check supply voltage & signal noise. Daikin's communication is sensitive to low or unstable voltage. Measure voltage at the outdoor unit under load — sustained low voltage (long/undersized wire runs, a weak circuit) corrupts the signal and throws U4. Also keep the communication wire away from running it bundled tightly alongside high-current lines, which injects noise.
- Outdoor PCB capacitor & board. The outdoor PCB capacitor is a common failure point that causes intermittent or permanent U4 — a bulged top or leaked electrolyte is conclusive. If wiring, order, and voltage all check out and a reset doesn't hold, the communication module on the indoor or outdoor PCB has failed and the board needs replacement (a technician job on most models).
Parts & costs
| Part | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 14/4 stranded comms cable | $30–80 | If the run is damaged/undersized. Match gauge to the line length. |
| Outdoor PCB capacitor | $15–45 | Bulged/leaking = replace. Match capacitance & voltage rating. |
| Control board (PCB) | $120–350 | Last resort. Verify exact model compatibility. |
| Digital multimeter | $20–50 | For the voltage and continuity checks above. |

Can I fix a Daikin U4 myself?
Often yes — the most common cause is a wiring issue you can correct: a loose terminal, corrosion, or wires landed in the wrong order between the indoor and outdoor blocks. Power down at the breaker, verify each numbered terminal matches end to end, snug (don't overtighten) the connections, and reset. If wiring is perfect and U4 returns, it's a board/capacitor fault that needs a technician.
The U4 came back after I replaced the indoor board — why?
Almost always the wires were re-landed in the wrong order, or the fault is actually on the outdoor board, not the indoor one. Recheck that every terminal matches end to end, and inspect the outdoor PCB capacitor for bulging. A swapped signal wire produces U4 immediately even with a brand-new board.
Does U4 mean low refrigerant?
No. U4 is strictly a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units — wiring, voltage, or a control board. Refrigerant problems show as different codes and as poor cooling/heating, not U4. Don't add refrigerant to chase a U4.
